This year-long research initiative focused on assessing how native plants in 11 educational gardens at the O'Hara Nature Center contribute to supporting pollinating insect biodiversity. In collaboration with the Cornell Waste Management Institute and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the research aims to provide valuable data. NYSDOT plans to utilize this information to develop specifications for manufactured topsoil mixes in roadside landscaping projects across New York State. These specifications will support the establishment of native pollinator-friendly plant populations. The purpose of this document and report is to present a case study that inspires individuals and communities to initiate or continue the development of pollinator gardens or meadow areas. By utilizing native plants, we can collectively contribute to the preservation, maintenance, and expansion of habitats for pollinating species in our communities. π¬ πΌ π
