During my time as a Food Security Volunteer with Peace Corps Nepal (2013โ€“2015), I developed a suite of educational materials to address pressing food security challenges faced by Nepalese villagers and volunteers. These materials were born from the need for a simplified, accessible "cheat sheet" approach to learning, specifically tailored to the realities and needs of rural communities.
The primary goal of this work was to create highly visual, schematic educational tools that utilized simple language and clear visuals. This approach aimed to empower individualsโ€”regardless of their literacy level or prior experienceโ€”to confidently follow step-by-step guides and achieve desired outcomes. These guides covered practical topics such as building improved cookstoves and establishing coffee nurseries, among others.
Once completed, these training materials were integrated into Peace Corps Nepalโ€™s Pre-Service Training (PST) and In-Service Training (IST) programs. They became a core part of the curriculum, providing a valuable resource for both volunteers and community members.
This effort was made possible through the collaborative support of Peace Corps Nepal staff, including Nelson Chase, Diana Partl, Raju Kandel, Chakra BK, and Daulat Karki. Additionally, contributions from fellow Peace Corps Volunteersโ€”Matthew Freeman, Ben Wagner, and Garrett Morrisโ€”were instrumental. Importantly, the input and feedback from local families and farmers were critical in refining and enhancing the effectiveness of these materials.
