At the O’Hara Nature Center, a student-led project funded by the Greater Irvington Land Trust (GILT) ($512.50) helped launch hands-on shiitake mushroom workshops for the Irvington community. With new tools and a simple, teachable curriculum, we created a framework for learning that works after school, on weekends, and throughout the summer.
These workshops welcomed everyone, from 1st graders to adults, and have reached more than 110 community members across Irvington and the Rivertowns. Participants learned how to grow shiitake mushrooms sustainably by using logs from invasive Norway maple, turning a local challenge into a practical resource and a shared learning experience.
The images below capture moments from the workshops and community events, highlighting the skills we practiced, the concepts we explored, and the people who helped bring this grant-funded work to life.
